Despite the drought, inspections confirm the quality of the sea and lakes. Regional Environment Councillor Elisa Venturini: “A guarantee for citizens and tourists”
VENICE – Over 93% of the monitored bathing waters in Veneto are classified as “excellent” quality. This data confirms the quality of the regional environmental heritage and helps make the coasts and lakes of the area more attractive.
A significant result also in light of the drought. “It is a very important figure, by no means taken for granted, because when there is little water in the rivers, the risk that lower quality water reaches the sea is real,” explains Elisa Venturini, regional councilor for the Environment.
“This data certifies the quality of our waters and, at the same time, the effectiveness of the monitoring work carried out every day by ARPAV. The sea and lakes are an extraordinary resource for Veneto, from an environmental, tourist, and economic perspective. Ensuring safe, clean, and constantly monitored waters for citizens and visitors is a priority,” adds Venturini.
Monthly checks during the season
The monitoring network concerns the Adriatic Sea and the main bathing lakes of Veneto. During the season, ARPAV conducts checks at least monthly, through targeted sampling and analysis.
The checks concern not only the microbiological quality of the waters. The main environmental parameters are also measured, including air and water temperature, wind, currents, and wave motion. In addition, visual inspections are conducted to identify any presence of waste or other issues.
In case of irregularities, temporary disqualification is triggered
“Monitoring is primarily a true means of prevention and protection, not just a snapshot of the situation,” emphasizes the councilor.
When the limits set by regulations are exceeded, further checks are immediately triggered. If necessary, a temporary ban on bathing in the affected area is imposed, which remains in effect until full compliance conditions are restored.
“Having over 93% of waters classified as excellent is a result that Veneto can be proud of,” concludes Venturini. “Environmental quality is a precious asset: it must be defended with timely controls, prevention, and transparency. It is also one of the main calling cards of our region and a decisive element in strengthening its tourist appeal, from the coastline to the lakes.”
