Leonardo Fabbri wins in Budapest, surpassing 22 meters for the sixth time this season. Seasonal record for Pietro Arese in the 1500
BUDAPEST (HUNGARY) – Once again over 22 meters. Less than a month before the European Championships in Birmingham (August 10-16), Leonardo Fabbri continues to throw at extremely high levels. At the Gold meeting of the Continental Tour in Budapest, the Florentine shot putter indeed reaches 22.04 meters.
A measure that the European champion and world bronze medalist in weightlifting reaches in the final round, already assured of victory. Sixth time this season (fifth in Aresepoco just over a month) above 22, all just ten days after the world record of the year with 22.74 achieved at the Diamond League in Eugene.
The athlete had thrown 22.50 in February in Stellenbosch, twice at 22.14 (Golden Gala in Rome and Pergine Valsugana) and finally 22.21 in Zagreb.
In Hungary, Fabbri had taken the lead in the second round with a 21.40, after an initial 20.53. The Italian champion continued by throwing 21.10 and 21.34. The fifth throw was just shy of the 22-meter mark, at 21.94. It was with the sixth and final throw that yet another excellent result of the season was achieved.
According to the Jamaican Olympic bronze medalist Rajindra Campbell (21.52) who had beaten the Italian in Zagreb. Third was the Nigerian Chuk Enekwechi (21.48) ahead of the New Zealander Tom Walsh (21.38), seventh place for Nick Ponzio with 20.13 just a few days after the 20.66 on Friday in Memphis.
Almost record-breaking times
Second career time for Pietro Arese in the 1500 meters. The European bronze medalist runs in 3:31.87, just over a second from his Italian record. A result that bodes well since it is the third fastest time ever for an Italian after his record (3:30.74) and the 3:31.42 of Federico Riva.
The runner from Turin finishes in sixth place with the Kenyan Phanuel Koech winning in 3:31.09. In the women’s race, the Australian Abbey Caldwell takes the victory in 4:01.79, with eleventh place going to Ludovica Cavalli (4:05.73) and thirteenth to Marta Zenoni (4:07.20).
