After nine months since the shocking theft, the Apollo Gallery reopens, albeit with empty display cases

Months later, here is the Gallery of Apollo again, but without treasures. Christophe Leribault, the museum director, clarifies in a statement that the jewels, including the famous Regen diamond, will return, but they will be moved to a new room equipped with state-of-the-art security systems. In October 2025, in a dramatic turn of events, thieves entered the gallery using a lift, then broke the display cases and mockingly made off with eight precious items. The heist lasted seven minutes. To date, we remember that only the crown of Empress Eugenie has been recovered, now undergoing restoration after being found severely damaged. The theft sparked a huge whirlwind of controversy, due to the thieves’ modus operandi and the complete lack of security in the room, something shocking and surreal. Today’s reopening, although devoid of artworks, aims to symbolize a return to that normalcy that now only presents frescoes and golden decorations. All of this is born from a desire for redemption, to definitively distance from controversies and unnecessary noise. Strolling through the halls, as was customary in the seventeenth century, when the palace, let us remember, was the residence of the French monarchy. Awaiting the return of art.
