Venice Film Festival 2026: Nanni Moretti’s return leads the Italians in competition

1 Mins read

President Pietrangelo Buttafuoco and Director Alberto Barbera presented the 83rd International Film Festival and revealed the titles and authors, including the Italian contenders

“Moretti has been missing in Venice since 1889,” with this amusing slip of the tongue, Barbera, presenting Nanni Moretti’s film, opened the score of Italian works competing this year for the Golden Lion. It is precisely with It Will Happen Tonight that Moretti makes his return, and he does so by entering through the front door. It’s obvious that he will lead the pack of Italian feature films in competition that will undoubtedly spark curiosity and desire from today onwards. The list of authors includes Return to Buenos Aires by Marco Bechis, The Fire You Carry Inside by Edoardo De Angelis, The Echo Chamber by Andrea Pallaoro, and The Stranger by Paolo Strippoli. Five titles, five stories, and just as many ambitions. All this comes after the announcement a few days ago of the film that will open the Festival, namely Ink by Danny Boyle, and the closing film God Laughs by Giovanni Veronesi, starring Pierfrancesco Favino. Here comes the Venice Film Festival revving its engines, starting from the official selection presented yesterday, and it does so appropriately, with a lineup of great appeal in all its sections, evoking the right pathos that will lead us to September 2, the start date of the event, with Greta Scarano as the presenter for the opening and closing nights and the news of the two lifetime achievement lions, which will go to George Clooney and Ellen Burstyn, respectively.
